One of the best champions Ramon fought goes by the name of
Sakmongkol (whose name I have also seen spelled as Sakmongkhong) . He fought
him once in 1991, in Thailand, in the famous Lumpinee Stadium. Ramon says
that he heard that Sakmongkol had six different trainers before their fight.
Six different trainers trained him especially for Ramon. Sakmongkol was only
18 years old and he almost proved to be too much for Ramon Dekkers.
That night at Lumpinee against Sakmongkol, Dekkers was
overwhelmed by the younger fighter's elbow attacks. Throughout most of the
fight, Ramon was a bloody mess. Ramon was still standing at the end of Round
5 but the fight was lost by decision. Sakmongkol received some elbows as
well and lost a lot of blood. It was one of the bloodiest fights ever.
